The Language Ability Test That Is Required for Canadian Permanent Residency

IELTS/CELPIP is required?

Both tests make you eligible for Canadian PR and they assess your capability to use the language in a day-to-day situation.

IELTS General Test Format

Reading: (1 Hour – 40 Questions)

There are several question types factual (True, False, Not Given), opinionated (Yes, No, Not Given), MCQs, Sentence Completion, Summary/Table/Flowchart/Note Completion, Short-Answer, Matching Headings, Matching Information, Matching Features, Diagram Label Completion, etc.

Part 1 may consist of two or three short paragraphs or several shorter paragraphs. Part 2 consists of two paragraphs. Part 3, will have one long paragraph.

Writing: (1 Hour)

Writing consists of Task1 and Task2

You will be assessed based on task achievement, cohesion, coherence, grammatical precision, and lexical resource.

Task1 (20 Minutes) letter writing

The letter writing should be at least 150 words and it would be a formal, personal, or semi-formal letter.  

Task 2 (40 Minutes) Essay Writing

Opinion, Agree/Disagree. Advantage/Disadvantage, Two-Part, Problem, and Solution.

Listening (approximately 30 minutes – 40 questions)

There are several question types Matching, Multiple Choice, Plan/Map/Diagram labeling, Form Completion, Table Completion, Sentence Completion, Summary Completion, Short-answer questions, etc.

IELTS Speaking description

The Speaking test consists of an interview between the test takers and an examiner. All Speaking tests are recorded.

Timing: 11–14 minutes

Task Types: The speaking section evaluates your use of spoken English. Every
test is recorded.

  • Part 1 – The examiner will evaluate you on a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies, and interests. It lasts four to five minutes.
  • Part 2 – A topic/cue card will be given that asks you to talk about a particular topic. You will have a minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes and you will then be asked one or two questions on the same topic.
  • Part 3 – you will be asked further questions about the topic in Part 2 to discuss more abstract ideas and issues. This lasts four to five minutes.

There will be an evaluation based on task response, cohesion, coherence, grammatical precision, and lexical resource.

CELPIP General Test Format

Listening: (47-55 minutes)

There are six subsection types Listening and you listen to the audio and answer the question by giving the answers from drop-down menus.

Reading: (55-60 minutes)

There are four subsection types and by reading and answering the keywords or the inference from the question which will be mostly drop-down menus.

Writing: (53-60 minutes)

Task1: Write an Email of 150 to 200 words like how you write a letter on the IELTS

Task2: Responding to Survey Question by choosing an option and writing the opinion in 150 to 200 words

Speaking: (15-20 minutes)

There are Eight question types in which you need to speak for 60 to 90 seconds and the preparation time for these sections will be 30 to 60 seconds.
